Mobile apps that appear ‘consumer’ but are really B2B

I installed an app yesterday that I thought would give me a measure of convenience, but stumbled onto a gold mine for retail businesses.

Example: CardStar is an app that get’s all the retail loyalty (tracking?) barcoded widgets stored on your keychain onto your phone. I installed it yesterday and was able to scan some of the widgets and store them. Later, I used one at the drugstore with no problems. Overall it was a good experience.

Long term, CardStar promises to offer deals and coupons for the merchant, but it could easily offer you similar deals to competitors in the area. Detailed data on actual spending by Zipcode has real value (v. inflated value based on number of members/users). In that sense, CardStar is really a B2B business that uses a simple app with enough value to start collecting data.

So - if everyone has a smartphone, think of some small piece of value you can give a customer that translates into a big value for a business.
