Circling back on assumptions kills pitch but saves reputation

So I was in process of developing a pitch for a new idea and as I’ve done so many times in the past, I laid out the major bullets on market size, business plan, etc. When I got to listing competitors I thought it would be a good idea to check their progress. It must have been a while since I last checked because the major competitor branched out enough in their existing service to cover the ‘gaping hole’ I identified. In short, the pitch was killed.

So not only did this turn out to be a bad idea, but I’m beginning to wonder if I can still find and develop new opportunities. Lord knows there way too much duplication of efforts today (Group Messaging anyone?) and more work needs to be done in overlooked (boring?) markets. On the bright side, it does affirm one of my personal set of best practices to always challenge my assumptions by circling back to the facts that were their basis. Without that discipline I risk sticking my neck out for no good reason.
